My name is Raffaele Mastrorocco, and I am a PhD Researcher at the European University Institute (EUI) in the Department of Political and Social Sciences. I am also currently a Research Assistant at Johns Hopkins SAIS, working for Professor Nina Hall on her project investigating how far-right leaders engage in global environmental politics. Prior to my PhD, I obtained an MA from the College of Europe (Natolin), an MA from the University of Bologna (Forlì Campus), and a BA from the University of Florence.
I study the effects of the emergence and election of far-right parties in democratic countries on national threat perceptions and multilateral security organisations.
My PhD thesis examines these dynamics within the Italian context. Drawing on in-depth case studies from Italian governments between 2014 and 2024, I examine the diverse forms of far-right influence in the EU (CSDP) and NATO.
I was also involved as a Research Assistant in a project on ad-hoc coalitions and crisis responses in global politics, ADHOCISM. Besides this, I've contributed to thinking about the future of EU enlargement in light of the Russian war against Ukraine. I also follow the security dynamics in Central and South-Eastern Europe.
More broadly, I am interested in the International Politics of the Far Right, European and International Security, Party Politics and Foreign and Security Policy, and all things Multilateralism.
